Function

Disodium Phosphate is a collection of sodium salts and phosphoric acids used to enhance flavors in processed meats and cheeses, soups, canned goods, gravy mixes, preserved fruits, bake goods and other processed foods. Disodium Phosphate is also used as an emulsifier, neutralizing, foaming, texture-modifying, and whipping agent in processed foods and beverages. Disodium Phosphate is an inexpensive alternative to natural acids and salts.

Other Use and Industries

Disodium Phosphate is used as an anti-caking agent in personal cosmetic products, a corrosion inhibitor, used in industrial cleaning products, and often used as a pesticide ingredient.

Health Effects

Disodium Phosphate may agitate already existing conditions for asthmatic people and people suffering from gout. Children under the age of 12 weeks should not consume Disodium Phosphate. Disodium Phosphates if inhaled can cause breathing disturbances and irritate the eyes and skin if exposed to directly. Disodium Phosphate if consumed directly may cause diarrhea, vomiting and possible allergic reactions.

Disodium phosphate is a salt of phosphoric acid, which when consumed reduces the level of calcium in the body. It is used as a food additive and can also be found as a laxative.
