Function

Glucuronolactone is a naturally occurring chemical that is important in the structural composition of connective tissue. In food use, it is a white, odorless solid that is soluble in hot or cold water. It is rapidly absorbed and metabolized into non-toxic metabolites. Glucuronolactone is found naturally in the body as a substance produced by the metabolism of glucose in the human liver. The compound is a popular ingredient in energy drinks, as it is thought to fight fatigue and provide an overall sense of well being. It is available in powdered form as a nutritional supplement.

Other Use and Industries

Uses of Glucuronolactone as an ingredient outside of the food and beverage industry includes use as a liver detoxicant. It is often administered orally to manage the support of collagen and joint health, and to strengthen tendons and ligaments. Body builders use Glucuronolactone as a performance enhancer and recovery aid. Glucuronolactone is used as a skin hydrator and is found in hair conditioners.

Health Effects

The safety of Glucuronolactone as an ingredient is unknown, since the majority of beverages and supplements containing it also contain caffeine or taurine. Studies on Glucuronolactone alone have not been widely researched.

There are reported benefits of consuming energy drinks with Glucuronolactone and caffeine, such as increased stamina, improved energy, and relief from drowsiness. The Glucuronolactone/caffeine combination has been known to speed reaction time and have positive effects on human mental performance. Some top-selling energy drinks on the market contain 600mg of Glucuronolactone, which is over the recommended limit; however, no studies have reported any proof of adverse effects. Due to Glucuronolactone’s glycogenic properties, diabetics should use caution when consuming food and beverages containing the substance. Glucuronolactone has properties similar to glucose, but is partly oxidized.

Diabetics should use caution when consuming products containing Glucuronolactone because of its glycogenic properties. Pregnant women should check with their physician before consuming anything containing Glucuronolactone, as its effects on the body and fetus are still unknown.

Origins

Glucuronolactone used in energy drinks most often synthetically produced, and is said to be manufactured under high and constant quality controls. Its use as an energy supplement complies with food regulatory requirements and pharmaceutical standards. Glucuronolactone is the by-product obtained by oxidation of plant-derived glucose, mainly corn. Since a majority of the corn used in food products is reported to be genetically modified, the Glucuronolactone present in many ingredients may have been sourced from genetically modified crops.
