Function

Triacetin is a fat used to reduce the surface tension and viscosity of drinks. It is one of the few known fats that can be dissolved in water. It is also used as a solvent in liquid flavorings.

Other Use and Industries

Triacetin is used as a plasticizing agent in the production of cigarette filters and pharmaceutical products, as well as a lubricant in cosmetics.

Health Effects

Triacetin is very safe and is believed to be metabolized like any other fat in the body. In fact, it has been suggested for pharmaceutical use as a component of intravenous feeding tubes.

Cultural concerns regarding triacetin can vary. As it is made from glycerol, a product that may be produced from animal fat, triacetin may be a concern for vegans or vegetarians. If animal fat was used to make the glycerol, the resulting triacetin may not be kosher or halal depending on the animal from which the fat was taken and the conditions under which the animal was slaughtered. Concerned consumers are recommended to check for label certifications when possible.

Origins

Triacetin is a fat, similar in composition to glycerol (the backbone of triglycerides). It is synthetically produced from glycerol and acetic acid. Though it is technically a fat, triacetin dissolves in water.
