Health Effects
The health effects of molasses powder resemble those of molasses. It is a good source of iron. It helps our body in replenishing iron reserves and thereby increasing energy. Molasses powder has calcium content of 16% which can help in strengthening teeth and bones. Molasses is rich in minerals like manganese, copper, magnesium and potassium. Copper helps in elimination of free radicals, production of melanin pigment, effective iron utilization in the body and in the development of bone and connective tissue. Manganese is a component of an antioxidant enzyme which helps in building of a strong immune system. Potassium helps in nerve transmission and muscle contraction and magnesium also helps in energy production.
Molasses appears to be making headlines as one of the best home remedies around. There have feedback from those using molasses of its curing effects on cancerous tumors, fibroid tumors, anxiety, constipation, edema, heart palpitations, anemia, arthritic pain, joint pain, and acne, just to name a few. It has also been reported that molasses turns gray hair back to its original color and is a wonderful skin softener. Not only is it a great source of iron and calcium, but it's also a source of potassium, magnesium, copper, and manganese. Though it is high in iron, it is also high in calcium, which tends to prevent iron from being absorbed by the body. Thus its benefits as a mineral supplement may be a bit overrated.
Origins
Molasses had a somewhat unsavory history during Prohibition in the US. It is the primary base for the manufacture of rum. Molasses importation became synonymous with the bootlegging industry and with organized crime. Molasses powder is made by dehydrating pure liquid molasses into free flowing powder. Commercial molasses powder generally contains soy powder and wheat starch as well. The major commercial producers of molasses powder are China, India, Malaysia and the United States.Molasses is a thick, brown to deep black, honey-like substance made when cane or beet sugar is processed. It is enjoyed as a sweetener in many countries, and most particularly in England where it is called treacle. For hundreds of years, molasses and sulfur, or treacle and brimstone were thought to have healthful benefits, and children were frequently given doses of the product.
