Function

Propylene glycol monostearate is used in baked products, pastries, ice cream and processed foods. It is an emulsifier and is also present in creams and dough as a conditioner. Propylene glycol monostearate is also known as PGMS.

Propylene glycol monostearate is used in the manufacturing of cosmetics and personal care products. It is also used to make paints, industrial solvents, deodorants and detergents.

Health Effects

Propylene glycol monostearate adds calories and provides small amounts of energy. Propylene glycol monostearate in large doses can be harmful. It is known to cause kidney damage in many species in dosages of 6g per kg or more. Limiting the consumption is advisable, though in small doses the compound is non-toxic.

Stearates are trans-fats and are known sometimes to be contaminated by pesticide residues or trace metals from processing. Stearates may come from animal or vegetable sources.
