Calcium Silicate

Function

Calcium silicate is used in many powdered products as an anti-caking agent. Common foods that contain calcium silicate are table salt, baking powder, sugar, powdered sugar, and dried whey products. Calcium Silicate is also known as Calcium Orthosilicate.

Other Use and Industries

Calcium silicate is used medicinally as an antacid. It has several applications in construction materials. It is a component of cement, roof tiles, bricks, and it is used as an alternative to asbestos for its insulating properties. Calcium silicate also has fire retardant properties and is used as a passive fire protectant.

Health Effects

Calcium silicate is permitted for use in foods at a level not to exceed 2% of the total weight. Although the acceptable daily intake level has not been determined, no side effects were reported.

Origins

Calcium silicate is produced by reacting calcium oxide with silica. The amount or ratio of silica produces many different forms of calcium silicate.
