Calcium D-Pantothenate
Function
Calcium D-Pantothenate is a dietary supplement and is the preferred form of vitamin B5. It is mostly used in multivitamin and B-Complex vitamin preparations. Although vitamin B5 is found naturally in many foods, Calcium D-Pantothenate is often used to fortify cereals and grain based products. It is also used to fortify pet foods as well.
Calcium D-Pantothenate is also known as Vitamin B5, Calcium salt of Pantothenic acid, Calcium D-(+)- Pantothanate, Calcium Pantothenate.
Other Use and Industries
Pantothenate is used in hair care and cosmetic products but it appears that Calcium D-Pantothenate is used specifically in food and supplements.
Health Effects
It is recommended that adults consume 4 – 7 mg of Vitamin B5 per day, through the foods they consume or supplementation. Calcium D-Pantothenate is the preferred form of Vitamin B5 because of the added calcium.
Calcium D-Pantothenate is not known to be toxic to humans. In fact, high doses, 10,000 mg, have been used and showed no toxic effects. It was noted that high doses of Calcium D-Pantothenate can cause diarrhea, heart burn and nausea.
Origins
Pantothenate is produced in the laboratory using bacteria that excrete pantothenate in fermentation. The fermentation product is then reacted with a calcium salt. The product is then filtered, spray dried, and granulated to obtain the free-flowing powder form of Calcium D-Pantothenate.
